The Idol of American Politics

The government has become the dominant idol of American life. State worship is real.

(Some reflections on the eve of Election Day)

From an unbeliever's point of view, the state is the most powerful force on the planet. And humans, created in God's image, can't resist the impulse to give allegiance and even worship that which they perceive to be most powerful.

Statism allows leaders to control morality by manipulating public opinion, normalize every sexual fetish, legalize the murder of unborn children, & punish anyone who stands in the way.

Religion in public life is inevitable. If there is no God above the state, the state is god.

In a statist system, Christianity represents a treasonous threat to the god of the state, and must therefore be punished and expelled from public life. The pagan state cannot abide the God of the Bible.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God who died and rose again to forgive sin and establish his church. By his death and resurrection, he has been given all authority on heaven and earth. His name is above every name, and every knee will ultimately bow in heaven and on earth.

These are not merely spiritual realities in some ethereal realm. These realities are real and true in this world right now. Christ is presently enthroned above the universe. Jesus is Lord over all right now.

The religious quality of politics is inescapable. Human governments & political powers are linked to spiritual conflicts that wage war against the living God in the unseen realm. We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against a vast array of spiritual forces.

The political sphere in Wash DC (not to mention state & local governments) is the theater where an unseen spiritual conflict is playing out against the ultimate rule of God. The angelic hosts of God are at work thru God's people to establish justice & righteousness on the earth.

They are opposed to the demonic realm of rulers, authorities, cosmic powers, & spiritual forces of evil, whose chief target is to corrupt and destroy the image of God through rampant sexual immorality, conflict between the sexes, ethnic division, and child sacrifice (abortion).

Ultimately, the politics of our nation is not about Democrats or Republicans. It's about the Supremacy of Jesus Christ and the goodness of his reign being represented in every aspect of our society.

If Christ is not Lord in our society, then we will not have a merely neutral secularism. There is no such thing. That's a deceptive fiction that will dupe Christians into compliance.

If our society will not submit to Christ as Lord, then we will be ruled by malevolent, spiritual powers.

Christ or chaos, those are the options.

May every Christian in our nation pray and work for the reign of Christ not only on Election Day, but every day of the year.

Upcoming King’s Domain Conference

Last year, I co-founded a ministry called “King’s Domain” with my friend and co-worker Wade Thomas. This is a media ministry that produces content pertaining to urgent matters for the modern church.
