Thank you for sharing this balanced and insightful essay on beauty. The section about beauty and modesty as partners particularly resonated with me, as I have always struggled with how to emphasize one without compromising the other. Your statement, "beauty attracts attention and modesty directs it," was incredibly powerful and clear. Thank you for reminding us, sisters in Christ, that a godly woman presents herself as a whole person - someone who is confident, radiant, and elegant. God bless you, brother!

At least in my corners of Christianity, the insistence on modesty and tacit disapproval of beauty comes largely from the older women of the parish. Honestly it seems like envy, the evil queen trying to spoil Snow White’s looks before giving up on that and ordering her killed (per the original fairy tale, not Disney).

It seems like the companion of stigmatizing masculinity that also happens in many churches; sabotage the young of both sexes so the old don’t have competition.

An excellent read on a worthy subject. Thank you for challenging the return of gnostic heresy and how we have confused slovenliness with modesty. "Beauty attracts attention, modesty directs" is an excellent maxim.

Irrespective of our definition of what modesty is, we are all called to be our best, and that applies to how we present ourselves to the world. God is neither boring, nor plain.

This was very well done in especially dangerous territory for a man! 😂 There is a reason God makes women beautiful.

Having raised a daughter, I can tell you how doggone difficult it was to buy clothes for her as young as 8 or 9. So much of it was geared toward sexualizing her and feminine parts that weren’t even developed yet! Insane.

The 3 pictures you shared that all were modest but only one was beautiful was just a perfect illustration of that concept of accentuating feminine beauty but doing so modestly.

It isn't cheap like a Walmart outfit, but I like buying dresses from Eshakti.com . For a fee, you can customize the dresses to your exact dimensions and change the neckline, the sleeves, and the skirt length. It allows making a very nice dress to be modest.

It’s so true that we are prone to fall into ditches. Part of our fallen nature.

I have been thinking about how to balance modesty and beauty. Especially having a 2 year old daughter and the very provocative and sexualized nature of female clothes in a lot of department stores.

I lean on my wife a lot for guidance here. But, it’s also my role as the husband to take ownership of that as well. I don’t want to have to compromise beauty for modesty, and vice versa. But rather find a way to express both to its fullest with the body that God has given to my daughter.

Thank you for the read, this was very helpful!

I think 2/3 of those women were dressed beautifully. Maybe I'm easily pleased?

I said “not all” are dressed beautifully, so do with that what you will. 2/3 qualifies as not all
