So, I guess this is the part where I tell you about myself. Well, there’s the usual details about my family for starters. My wife, Laura, and I have two beautiful children, Reese (girl) and Isaiah (boy). We really love each other and our family, albeit imperfectly, and thank God for the blessing of each other and our children.

Beyond this, I suppose I can tell you why I’ve recorded this record. There’s many reasons, not the least of which is a burning desire to pay for my seminary tuition! But each song is like a child. A special creation full of intricacies and meaning and crafted with great love and care.

I also have concerns for the state of God’s church. These concerns are neither new nor unique, but they are valid. Mostly, I have observed that the values of the kingdom of God are not mine, or ours collectively. “The way up is down,” I’ve heard it said. Christ values humility, weakness, poverty and the like: things that reveal our true condition of neediness and weakness.

But often my desire is to reveal my strengths and accomplishments in order to show how good a job I’ve done for Jesus and how this makes me a “good witness.” But see my flaws? No way.

In some of the most remarkable words ever uttered, Jesus said, “blessed are you who are poor… blessed are you who are hungry… blessed are you who weep…” Ironic, that Jesus did not say “blessed are you who do not drink” and “blessed are you who are in church 3 times per week” and “blessed are you who had your quiet time this morning.”

The character qualities that reveal God’s heart are precisely those that are embodied in poverty, weakness and brokenness.

Everything is backwards.
